Heart Check: Why are you here?

2 Peter 1: 1-11 (KJV)

1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 According to his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For  if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

God just wouldn’t let me rest this morning. I’ve been in this place…this storm…for a while now. Although I haven’t been bold enough to ask aloud, “Why are you keeping me here?”, He knew my thoughts and answered me today. Can you relate? Have you ever been in a holding pattern that had you so uncomfortable for so long and while you could see the light at the end of the tunnel, every time you took a step toward it, it seemed to move further away from you?

We often tell ourselves that we are stuck in an uncomfortable place because God is working on us…and I’m certain that He is. However, we must take a moment to really assess ourselves. Why is God having to work so hard on us? Why is it taking so long for us to move to the next phase of our lives?

We can fool ourselves all day and say that He is preparing us for riches, fame, or whatever else we have decided that God wants us to have. Yes, He wants us to do well, but He cares more that we ARE well. God has you (whomever you may be) in that holding pattern not because He is working on your pockets, but because He is working on your heart, your mind, and your soul.

It is not enough to know God. It is a must that He live through us. His loving spirit should shine through our actions as should His perfect will. There is a certain level of personal responsibility required of us as Christians. We are accountable for our knowledge of who He is and what He expects of us. So, as you question (silently or aloud) the reason that you are “stuck” in this place, ask yourself:

  • How do you treat God’s people (particularly those who can do nothing for you)?
  • Do you put neighbors before yourself?
  • Do you speak like a man or woman of God?
  • Do you speak in truth at all times?
  • Do you uplift or belittle those who think or behave differently?

Food for thought. Enjoy your day, loves.
